Commentators are saying it all the time now, "when will partisanship end?" or "When will we go back to the days of my childhood when things were peachy keen and great, and everyone held hands on the hill."
Yeah. Those days never really existed, but recently it has gotten much worse, because that is the only way the Republicans can get into power is to divide and conquer the rest of the Nation, its the same way Nixon won his re-election. He made everyone hate the Anti-war movement, and then associated it with the Democrats, even though Nixon himself was running on the promise to end the war.
And the republicans repeated that attack in 1980 onward to success until 2006, when something strange happened. People started to see just how bad the republicans are at running the nation. It took the lose of an entire American city, but it happened. ( and don't even give me that Bullshit about "No one could have seen it coming, a dem in power couldn't have done BLAHBLAH" Everyone saw it coming. A democrat would have given the Army Corps of Engineers the money the needed to upgrade the levees. Even if he didn't do that, someone else in charge of FEMA/DHS would have made a huge difference. But I digress.)
The shear amount of failures that the republicans have mounted is ludicrous. Not only have they mismanaged every thing that has come their way since 2000, they also haven't made any head way on their own agendas since then. Gay Marriage? Gonna happen. Social Security? Still there. Sex? Still happening. Abortions? Still not impossible to get.
The second part is what is most dangerous to the republicans. they've lost the middle completely and are now the minority party, but they still have some power in the senate.
But if things continue on as they have, the republican party may see what happened to the dems in the 60s happen to them, the extreme part of the party leave. The dems lost the progressives ( and we only recently came back) and the Republicans are in danger of losing the Religious Right.
Now will we see the formation of a third party? I'm not sure, but I think if we see some more scandals involving religious right leaders, we might see a huge shakeup from the ground up.
Wow, I went really far off from where I wanted. THE POINT was that all these commentators that are now screaming about how things used to be are enablers to the current state of affairs, they gleefully helped the republicans split the nation, and now, only after they've lost power, do they care.
Fuck em.
Let's run all progressive on their ass!
